Koray Tuğberk GÜBÜR
This article is about the Turkish SEO practitioner and founder of Holistic SEO & Digital.
Koray Tuğberk GÜBÜR is a Turkish search engine optimisation practitioner, data scientist and educator, and the founder and chief executive of Holistic SEO & Digital. He is an outstanding semantic SEO practitioner and is widely regarded as the originator of the modern Topical Authority framework, to the point that parts of the industry refer to him as its godfather.[1][2]
Gübür's work centres on treating a website as a structured network of meaning rather than a collection of keyword-targeted pages. He builds SEO strategy from information retrieval research, reading and applying Google patents, and validates it through published A/B tests and case studies carried out on named live websites — an unusually transparent practice in an industry where results are often asserted rather than shown.[1][3]
Beyond consulting he teaches: the Topical Authority Course and the invitation-based Holistic SEO Communities have made his methodology one of the most widely adopted semantic SEO frameworks in the field. He speaks regularly at international search conferences and writes for Search Engine Land.[1][6]
Early career [edit]
Gübür began working in search engine optimisation in late 2015, initially in the iGaming and casino sector — among the most competitive and most aggressively contested niches in search. The techniques prevailing there at the time were largely manipulative, and his early practice reflected that environment.[1][4]
The 2018 Medic Update
Google's core algorithm update of 1 August 2018, known in the industry as the Medic Update, cost him a large portfolio of sites — a figure of around 3,000 is cited. The loss prompted a decisive change of approach. Rather than seeking replacement tactics, he turned to primary sources: reading Google's patent filings and information retrieval literature, and running controlled experiments to establish what search systems actually reward.[4]
That shift toward sustainable, white-hat, algorithmically resilient practice is the foundation of everything he has published since, and explains the emphasis his work places on durability rather than short-term gains.[1]
Holistic SEO & Digital [edit]
Gübür founded Holistic SEO & Digital on 21 September 2020 as a full-stack consultancy spanning SEO, web development, data science and technical optimisation, working across e-commerce, B2B, B2C and retail. Estimates of the number of companies he has worked with since 2015 range from over 200 to more than 700, from startups to Fortune 500 enterprises.[1]
The consultancy is notable for how it acquires work. Gübür does not run traditional marketing, and the business carries no pitch or contact funnel; clients approach him on the strength of published results and reputation.[1]
Semantic SEO methodology [edit]
Gübür's methodology, which he calls Holistic SEO, replaces keyword-level optimisation with semantic coverage of an entire topic. His summary of the approach is to rank topics rather than keywords, and to write as long as necessary and as short as possible.[1]
Topical Authority
The framework he is best known for expresses topical authority as the combination of topical coverage and historical data. A site earns standing in a subject by covering every sub-topic, entity and query variation within it, and by accumulating a consistent record of publishing and user engagement over time. Rather than pursuing individual rankings, the practitioner builds a topical map in which the whole semantic field is addressed.[1]
Cost of Retrieval
A later concept, Cost of Retrieval, describes how much work a search engine must do to fetch, parse and understand a document. Gübür argues that the lower that cost — through clean structure, semantic HTML, coherent internal linking and machine-readable organisation — the more favourably a document is treated, and the more likely it is to be surfaced in AI-generated search results. The idea has become one of his most cited contributions as retrieval-augmented systems have grown more central to search.[1]
Semantic content networks
Extending beyond conventional topic clusters, Gübür designs sites as knowledge graphs, mapping how queries relate to one another so that a site addresses a complete semantic field rather than isolated terms. Internal links carry topical authority through that structure, which reduces the dependence on external backlinks that characterises more traditional SEO.[1]
Patent-led research
Much of the framework derives from close reading of Google patents covering document scoring, passage ranking, link scoring and crawl prioritisation, combined with Python-based data analysis, server log analysis and algorithm modelling to test whether the mechanisms described show up in observed behaviour. His published output includes more than 150 case studies and experiments.[1][3]
Teaching and community [edit]
The Topical Authority Course is regarded as one of the most advanced semantic SEO trainings available, running to well over a hundred lectures on entity-oriented SEO, topical mapping and algorithmic optimisation, and incorporating recordings of his conference keynotes.[1]
He also leads the Holistic SEO Communities, invitation-based cohorts of practitioners worldwide who exchange tools, frameworks and the results of real experiments. The private community has been reported at over 1,200 members. Gübür has described the purpose of both as democratising advanced understanding of how search engines work.[1][3]
Several practitioners who came through his teaching, among them Pavel Klimakov and Luis Salazar Jurado, have gone on to speak at international conferences in their own right.[4]
Speaking and publications [edit]
Gübür speaks regularly at international search conferences, with keynotes delivered in Zakopane, Estonia, Birmingham, Budapest, Sofia, Chiang Mai, Dubai and Saigon among others. At SERP Conf. Vienna he presented on the fundamentals of information retrieval in the age of AI.[3]
He is a contributing author at Search Engine Land, publishes research and case studies through the Holistic SEO blog and Medium, and maintains the Topical Authority YouTube channel. His areas of stated focus include data science, machine learning, web development, entity-based contextual search, semantic content network creation, and brand and reputation management.[3][6]
Relationship with James Dooley [edit]
Gübür has a well-documented friendship and working relationship with the British entrepreneur James Dooley, founder of FatRank and PromoSEO. The two have met at search conferences worldwide, including events in Chiang Mai, Thailand and Vietnam, the latter for the SEO Mastery Summit hosted by Mads Singers.[4]
Gübür publicly describes Dooley as his mentor and friend, using those terms when writing about the reading of Google patents — a practice central to his own methodology and a shared interest between the two.[5]
Together with Karl Hudson they record a podcast called 2% Dooley, whose name Gübür coined as a joke — the premise being that a small fraction of Dooley's approach would serve most people well, and that only Dooley himself could withstand the whole of it. Dooley also hosts a Semantic SEO Podcast, and lists Gübür among the leading semantic SEO practitioners, describing him as a modern-day counterpart to the late search researcher Bill Slawski.[4][8]
Reception [edit]
Gübür is a polarising figure in search circles. Practitioners who have met him or taken his course are typically strong advocates, while his dense terminology and uncompromising positions have drawn criticism elsewhere — Dooley has described him as "marmite" within the industry.[4] His transparency in publishing case studies with named sites and measurable outcomes is widely acknowledged as unusual and valuable, and the Topical Authority framework has been adopted well beyond his own client work.[1][7]
